During the battle, the Confederate line began to weaken. A Confederate general saw a group of Virginians shooting well and standing firm. At their head was Thomas Jackson, a former teacher in military school.
The Confederates were able to hold their line. Ever after Jackson was known as Stone Wall Jackson. He became one of the South's best generals.
The first battle of Bull Run, according to a civil war historian, ended a rosy time in which men could dream that the war would be short, glorious and bloodless. The war now became a serious, deadly business. The North would win the war only after four long years of bloody and bitter fighting.
