The
North End - Huntington Heights
Second Annual
Tour of Historic Homes

The 1997 tour, which occurred on October 26th, featured five of the five hundred structures which contribute to our historic district.

During the tour, festivities were held on the Barrett House lawn, 5601 Huntington Avenue, and at Noland Memorial Church, 5501 Huntington Avenue. A light lunch was available for purchase at the church.

This is the Tilghman House at 311 68th Street. This two and a half story brick Colonial Revival home was built for Mrs. James Franklin Tilghman, grandmother of Judge Nelson Overton, in 1933.

Both of the above homes are on 66th Street. The top house is the DeAlba House. It is a unique brick Tudor Revival home built by W.T. Chapin in 1932 for his daughter, Anne, and her husband, James T. DeAlba. The home features a steeply-pitched roof that is common to the Tudor style, while incorporating an unusual dominant front gable.

Below the DeAlba house is the Henderson House. It combines both French Eclectic and Colonial Revival styles. Noteworthy features include the hipped roof of the main structure, a front-facing gable, and the hip-on gabled roof on the left side of the house. This custom home was built for Richard L. Henderson, Jr. and his family in 1935.

Above is the Harris House, 6306 Huntington Avenue. It was built for R. Logan Harris, of the Schmelz Bank. It is of the Georgian Revival style with brick laid in Flemish Bond. The house is roofed in the original slate and still retains its copper gutters and downspouts. The third floor gabled dormers feature Palladian-style windows.

The Watkins House, 325 59th Street, was built in 1925 by Mr. Van Hausen, and remained in the ownership of the original family for over fifty years. This Craftsman house shows its close relationship to simple Prairie house built in the four-square shape.
