Planned Future Activities for 2008

  1. ASME/AIAA Egg Drop Design Contest at The Nauticus in Norfolk on March 15, 2008. Seeking volunteers! POC: Jeff Flamm, 864-5944.

  2. Mr. James Batterson of NASA Langley Research Center will present a Lunch-and-Learn program entitled 21st Century Education Standards for Our Next-Generation Workforce on March 18, 2008, at 11:45 pm, in the NASA Langley Cafeteria.   3. Axel T. Mattson Lecture at the Point Plaza Suites and Conference Hotel on March 26, 2008, featuring Dr. Robert Hall, AIAA HRS 2008 Engineer of the Year. POC: Jeff Flamm, 864-5955.

2008 AIAA HRS Events

  1. The Peninsula Engineers Council (PEC) held its 38th Annual Awards Banquet on the evening of February 23, 2008 at the Point Plaza Suites & Conference Hotel, Newport News, to honor engineers who live and/or work in the Virginia Peninsula. AIAA HRS, NASA LaRC, and 25 other professional member societies/organizations of the PEC jointly sponsored the event.

  2. HRS members participated in the Career Day program and exhibit for over 500 high school students on the morning of February at the NASA LaRC H.J.E. Reid Conference Center. The purpose of Career Day is to encourage and inspire the students in choosing engineering as a career. HRS Education and Pre-college Committees, NASA LaRC, as well as 25 other professional member societies/organizations of PEC jointly sponsored the event.

  3. Dr. Paresh Parikh, NASA Deputy Manager for Management Integration, presented a joint ASME/AIAA dinner program entitled NASA Constellation Architecture at the Golden Palace Chinese Restaurant on January 31, 2008. HRS Program Committee and Eastern Virginia Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) jointly sponsored the event.

  4. Early evening showing of NASCAR IMAX film: NASCAR plus meeting racecar drivers Greg Edwards and Ashton Lewis, Jr. on January 16, 2008 at the Virginia Air & Space Center. HRS Public Policy Committee and Science and Technology Corporation (STC) jointly sponsored the program.

2007 AIAA HRS Events

  1. Peninsula FIRST LEGO League Tournament was held at Crittenden Middle School in Newport News on November 10, 2007. HRS Education and Pre-college Committees co-sponsored the activity.

  2. A joint lunch program on "Operational Capabiltiies of the F-22 Fighter Jet" by Lt. Col. Kevin Fesler, Commander of 94th Fighter Squadron (USAF), was held on October 25, 2007 at Virginia Air & Space Center (library). AIAA HRS and the National Capital Section (NCS) as well as Science and Technology Corporation (STC) jointly sponsored the program.

  3. A joint ASME/AIAA tour of St. George Brewing Company on October 15, 2007. HRS Programs Committee co-sponsored the event with Eastern Virginia Section of the ASME.

  4. Dr. Bill Kleb of NASA Langley Research Center presented a Lunch-and-Learn program entitled "Agile Software Development" on October 10, 2007 at the NASA Langley Cafeteria in Hampton, VA. HRS Career Enhancement and Young Professionals committees jointly sponsored the program.

  5. The Annual Oyster Roast was held at the NASA Langley Picnic Ground on October 3, 2007. HRS Programs Committee sponsored the event.

  6. A Golf Tournament for the fundraising of "Futures in Aerospace Scholarship" program was held on September 20, 2007 at the Langley Air Force Base Golf Course. HRS Education and Pre-college Committees co-sponsored the activity.

  7. One-day field trip to the National Air & Space Museumb's Udvar-Hazy Center was held on Saturday, June 9, 2007 via a chartered bus. HRS Young Professionals committee sponsored the event.

  8. HRS 44th Anniversary Awards Banquet was held in May 22, 2007 at the NASA Langley H.J.E. Reid Conference Center. AIAA Distinguished Lecturer, Dr. Roger Launius, Chair of the Division of Space History at the National Air and Space Museum, was the guest speaker. HRS Programs Committee sponsored the program.

  9. A "Legend for Lunch" program paying tribute to Dr. Richard T. Whitcomb, AIAA Honorary Fellow, was held on May 17, 2007 at Virginia Air & Space Center (library). HRS Public Policy Committee and Science and Technology Corporation (STC) jointly sponsored the program.

  10. Robert Powers, Defense Consultant with the Old Dominion University Research Foundation, presented a dinner program entitled "A Political Debate on the Vision for Space Exploration" on May 15, 2007 at the Golden Palace Restaurant in Hampton, VA. HRS Programs Committee sponsored the program.

  11. AIAA Region - 1 Mid-Atlantic Student Conference was held on April 13-14, 2007 at the NIA in Hampton, VA. HRS Programs Committee co-sponsored the event.

  12. Dr. Douglas O. Stanley, AIAA HRS 2007 Engineer of the Year, presented the Annual Axel T. Mattson Lecture on April 10, 2007. HRS Programs Committee sponsored the program.

  13. ASME/AIAA Egg Drop Competition was held on March 31, 2007 at the Nauticus in Norfolk, VA. HRS Program Committee and Eastern Virginia Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) jointly sponsored the event.

  14. Ms. Leah Meisel, Director of Human Capital Management at NASA LaRC, presented a lunch-and-learn program entitled "The Langley Career Path Model" on March 20, 2007 at the NASA Langley Cafeteria in Hampton, VA. HRS Career Enhancement and Young Professionals committees jointly sponsored the program.

  15. HRS Program Committee and Engineers Club of the Virginia Peninsula (ECVP) jointly sponsored the program.

2006 AIAA HRS Events

  1. Dr. Bruce Wielicki, Senior Scientist for Radiation Sciences at NASA Langley, will present a film entitled "The Great Warming" at 1:00 PM on November 14, 2006 at the NASA Langley H.J.E. Reid Conference Center. HRS Public Policy Committee and Science and Technology Corporation (STC) are jointly sponsoring the program.

  2. Mr. Chad Poultney, VSPE President, will present a dinner program entitled "New Requirements for Maintaining a Professional License" on November 16, 2006 at the Golden Palace restaurant, Hampton. HRS Career Enhancement Committee and Eastern Virginia Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) are jointly sponsoring the program.

  3. Mr. Bill Eastburn, Investment Advisor at Langley Federal Credit Union, presented a lunch-and-learn program entitled "Planning for Your Retirement Now, looking Beyond TSP/401K" on October 26, 2006 at the NASA LaRC Cafeteria Executive Dinning Room. HRS Young Professionals Committee sponsored the program.

  4. The Annual Oyster Roast was held at the NASA Langley Picnic Ground on October 5, 2006. HRS Programs Committee sponsored the event.

  5. Col. Richard Graham (retired USAF), presented a dinner program entitled "SR-71 Blackbird - An Engineering Marvel" on September 28, 2006 at Clarion Hotel & Conference Center. HRS programs Committee, Engineers Club of the Virginia Peninsula (ECVP), and Eastern Virginia Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) jointly sponsored the program.

  6. A Golf Tournament for the fund raising of "Futures in Aerospace Scholarship" program will be held on August 29, 2006 at the Langley Air Force Base Golf Course. HRS Education and Pre-college Committees jointly sponsored the activity.

  7. A luncheon was held in honor of Dr. Charles W. Steger, President of Virginia Tech, and Dr. Roger O. Simpson, President of AIAA, on June 21, 2006 at the Virginia Air and Space Center. Drs. Steger and Simpson gave a joint presentation entitled "Virginia Tech and Hampton Roads: A Winning Team". HRS Public Policy Committee, Peninsula Virginia Tech Alumni Association and Old Guard, and Science and Technology Corporation (STC) jointly sponsored the event.

  8. Mr. Raymond Whipple, member of NASA Langley Toastmasters, presented a lunch-and-learn program entitled "Speak Up - For Your Career" on June 20, 2006 at the NASA Langley Cafeteria Executive Dinning Room. HRS Career Enhancement and Young Professional Committees jointly sponsored the program.

  9. Mr. William Chana, AIAA Distinguished Lecturer and the author of "Over the Wing", presented a dinner program for the HRS 43rd Awards Banquet on the evening of May 23, 2006 at the NASA Langley H.J.E. Reid Conference Center. HRS Programs Committee sponsored the event.

  10. Mr. Kevin Kokal, founder of Alliance Engineering, presented a dinner program entitled "Starting a Business as a Professional Engineer" on the evening of May 17, 2006 at the Golden Palace restaurant, Hampton. HRS Career Enhancement Committee and Eastern Virginia Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) jointly sponsored the program.

  11. Mr. Thomas Horvath, AIAA 2006 Engineer of the Year, presented the Annual Axel T. Mattson Lecture on the evening of April 11, 2006 at the Point Plaza Suites & Conference Hotel, Newport News. HRS Programs Committee sponsored the program.

  12. Mr. Aneesh Chopra, Virginia Secretary of Technology, gave a lunchtime briefing entitled "Technology Outlook for Virginia" on March 30, 2006 at the Virginia Air & Space Center. The program attendees included LaRC senior staff and Hampton Roads community leaders. HRS Public Policy Committee and Science and Technology Corporation (STC) are jointly sponsored the event.

  13. The Peninsula Engineers Council (PEC) held its 36th Annual Awards Banquet on the evening of February 25, 2006 at the Virginia Air and Space Center, Hampton to honor engineers who live and/or work in the Virginia Peninsula. HRS Career Enhancement Committee, NASA LaRC, and 25 other professional member societies/organizations of the PEC jointly sponsored the event.

  14. HRS members participated in the Career Day program and exhibit for over 300 high school students on the morning of February 22 and 23, 2006 - during the National Engineers Week - at the NASA LaRC H.J.E. Reid Conference Center. The purpose of Career Day is to encourage and inspire the students in choosing engineering as a career. The AIAA exhibit featured a movie on Mars Exploration entitled "Destination Tomorrow" and information on aerospace technology. HRS Education and Pre-college Committees, NASA LaRC, as well as 25 other professional member societies/organizations of PEC jointly sponsored the event.

  15. A lunchtime program was held with three Virginia Congressional Representatives, Ms. Jo Ann Davis (R, 1st District), Mr. Robert Scott (D, 3rd District), and Randy Forbes (R, 4th District) to discuss aerospace policy issues on January 23, 2006 at the NASA LaRC Cafeteria Executive Dinning Room. The luncheon was preceded by a town meeting at the LaRC Reid Conference Center. HRS Public Policy Committee and NASA LaRC co-sponsored the event.

2005 AIAA HRS Events

  1. Mr. Kenneth Zick, a doctoral student at the University of Michigan, presented a technical lecture entitled "A Swarm of Wind-Driven Mars Rovers: Adaptive Exploration and Assembly" on the morning of December 16, 2005 at the National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) in Hampton, VA. HRS Young Professionals Committee and NIA co-sponsored the program.

  2. Dr. Tom Crouch, Smithsonian Institute's Senior Curator for Aeronautics, presented the Annual Wright Brothers Memorial Lecture entitled "The Daunting Dozen" on December 13, 2005 at the NASA LaRC Reid Conference Center. Dr. Crouch presented his selection of the 12 most innovative, best aircraft designs of the first century of flight. The theme of his talk was on the importance of Government funding in aerospace research and technology development. The lecture was preceded by a luncheon in Dr. Crouch's honor. HRS Public Policy Committee and NASA LaRC co-sponsored the program.

  3. A lunchtime program was held with Southeast Virginia Superintendents of Schools to discuss regional educational issues on December 7, 2005 at the NASA LaRC Cafeteria Executive Dinning Room. About 65 people, including Superintendents from 22 school districts in the region (from Virginia Beach to New Kent to Accomack Counties), were in attendance. HRS Public Policy Committee, Boeing, Lockheed Martin Corporation, Air Force Association, National Defense industries, and NASA LaRC co-sponsored the program.

  4. Dr. James Hansen, Professor of History at Auburn University and the author of "First Man" (a biography of Neil Armstrong), gave a lunchtime briefing and an afternoon lecture at the NASA LaRC Cafeteria and Reid Conference Center, respectively, on December 1, 2005. A book signing section with Dr. Hansen preceded the afternoon lecture. HRS Public Policy Committee and NASA Langley Colloquium Committee co-sponsored the program.

  5. Mr. Chris Van Allsburg, Author of "Jumanji", "Polar Express", and "Zathura", gave a lunchtime briefing and provided book signing on November 16, 2005 at the NASA LaRC Cafeteria Executive Dinning Room. HRS Public Policy Committee and NASA Langley Office of Communication & Education co-sponsored the program.

  6. Mr. Wayne Hale, Space Shuttle Program Manager, gave a morning briefing on "Space Shuttle Statue" on October 28, 2005 at the NASA LaRC H.J.E. Reid Conference Center. Nearly 200 people attended the event. HRS Public Policy Committee and NASA LaRC co-sponsored the program.

  7. Mr. Wayne Hale, Space Shuttle Program Manager, presented a briefing on "Shuttle Statue" on the evening of October 27, 2005 at the Virginia Air & Space Center. The program was preceded by a reception in Mr. Hale's honor. HRS Public Policy Committee, Boeing, and the City of Hampton co-sponsored the event.

  8. Mr. Jim Kelly, PE, presented a lunch & learn program entitled "Professional Engineering Licensing" on October 26, 2005 at the NASA LaRC Cafeteria Executive Dinning Room. HRS Career Enhancement Committee sponsored the program.

  9. The Annual Oyster Roast was held at the NASA Langley Picnic Ground on October 11, 2005. HRS Programs and Career Enhancement Committees jointly sponsored the activity.

  10. Ms. Meyera Oberndorf, Mayor of Virginia Beach, gave a keynote address in commemorating "The 85th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution guaranteeing women THE RIGHT TO VOTE" on the morning of August 25, 2005 at the NASA LaRC H.J.E. Reid Conference Center. The program was followed by a luncheon in Ms. Oberndorf's honor at the LaRC Cafeteria Executive Dinning Room. HRS Public Policy Committee and Federal Women's Program Committee jointly sponsored the program.

  11. Mr. Ward Burton, Winner of the DAYTONA 500 in 2002, gave a special afternoon briefing on “Race Car Aerodynamics” on August 3, 2005 at the NASA LaRC Pearl Young Theater. HRS Public Policy Committe sponsored the event.

  12. Mr. Eugene Huang, Virginia Secretary of Technology, gave a lunchtime briefing on “Cultivating Emerging Technologies” on June 23, 2005 at the NASA LaRC Cafeteria Executive Dinning Room.  The program attendees included LaRC senior staff and Hampton Roads community leaders.  HRS Public Policy Committee and National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) jointly sponsored the event.

A 15-team LEGO Robotics competition was held at the demonstration of Small Aircraft Transportation System (SATS) technologies on June 5, in Danville, VA.  HRS Public Policy Committee, Virginia Tech, the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research, and the SATS team jointly sponsored the event.

  16. Mr. Todd Sedler and Mr. Patrick Ryan, engineers at Northrop Grumman Newport News, presented a dinner program entitled: “Creating Submarine Hull Forms for the 21st Century" on May 31, 2005 at the Virginia Advanced Shipbuilding and Carrier Integration Center (VASCIC), Newport News.  HRS programs and Technical Committees, Engineers Club of the Virginia Peninsula (ECVP), and Eastern Virginia Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) jointly sponsored the program.

  17. Mr. Michael S. Francis, AIAA Distinguished Lecturer, presented a program on “X-Planes and UAV's” for the AIAA HRS 42nd Annual Awards Banquet on the evening of May 24 at the NASA Langley's H.J.E. Reid Conference Center.  HRS Programs Committee sponsored the program.

  18. Mr. John Dorsey and Mr. Albert Motley of NASA Langley presented a “NASA Night” dinner program on the evening of May 19, 2005 at the Holiday Inn, Hampton.  Mr. Dorsey gave a talk entitles "An Overview of Langley Research Center's Modular Systems and On-Orbit Assembly Capabilities."  Mr. Motley gave a talk on "NASA Trends: Agency Wide CMMI Pre-assessment."  HRS career Enhancement Committee and International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) jointly sponsored the program. 

  19. Mr. Edward E. Iacobucci, DayJet Corporation President and CEO, presented an afternoon lecture entitled "Per-Seat On-Demand Jet Travel" at the NASA LaRC H.J.E. Reid Conference Center on May 12, 2005.  The program was preceded by a luncheon in Mr. Iacobucci's honor at the LaRC Cafeteria Executive Dinning Room.  HRS Public Policy Committee, NASA LaRC, and National Consortium for Aviation Mobility (NCAM) jointly sponsored the program.

  20. Ms. Cindy Thorp, Founder and President of Disability Planning of Virginia and a Partner in the Teagle Financial Group, presented a lunchtime program entitled “Financial Strategies for Career Changes” on May 10, 2005 at the NASA LaRC H.J.E. Reid Conference Center's Langley Room.  HRS Young Professionals Committee sponsored the program.

  21. Mr. Ron Chapman, Director of the Virginia Quality Institute, presented a lunchtime program entitled “Career Course Correction” on April 26, 2005 at the NASA LaRC H.J.E. Reid Conference Center's Hampton Room.  HRS Young Professionals Committee sponsored the program.

  22. The AIAA Region I Student Conference was held on April 8 and 9, 2005 at University of Virginia.  HRS Education Committee provided funds to sponsor members of Student Chapters at Virginia Tech and Old Dominion University to participate at the event.

  23. Mr. Tom Hartmann, Quiet Supersonic Transport (QSST) Program Manager at Lockheed Martin gave a morning lecture entitled: “Lockheed Martin Skunk Works and the Quiet Supersonic Transport (QSST) Program” on March 29, 2005 at the NASA LaRC H.J.E. Reid Conference Center.  A luncheon in Mr. Hartmann's honor was held at the Reid Center after the lecture.  AIAA HRS Public Policy and Technical Committees and NASA LaRC jointly sponsored the program.

  24. Dr. Prasun Desai, AIAA 2005 Engineer of the Year, presented the Annual Axel T. Mattson Lecture entitled "Mars Exploration Rover Mission: Langley's Contributions and A Behind the Scenes Overview” on the evening of March 24, 2005 at the Point Plaza Suites & Conference Hotel, Newport News.  HRS Programs and Technical Committees jointly sponsored the program.

  25. The deadline for submitting an application to the 2005 AIAA HRS “Futures in Aerospace” Scholarship was March 11, 2005.  The Scholarship was open to high school seniors who intend to pursue a career in engineering or the physical or applied sciences pertinent to aerospace.  The scholarship would be a one time, nonrenewable award.  Two $2,000 scholarships would be awarded.  HRS Pre-college Committee sponsored the event.

  26. The AIAA Congressional Visits Day (CVD) was held on March 9, 2005 at Washington, D.C.  HRS Public Policy Committee sponsored candidates to participate at the event.

  27.   28. HRS members participated in the Career Day program and exhibit for over 500 high school students on the morning of February 23 and 24, 2005 - during the National Engineers Week - at the NASA LaRC H.J.E. Reid Conference Center.  The purpose of Career Day is to encourage and inspire the students in choosing engineering as a career.  The AIAA exhibit featured a movie on Mars Exploration entitled “Destination Tomorrow”, AIAA literature (including educator member applications), and information on aerospace technology.  HRS Education and Pre-college Committees, NASA LaRC, as well as 25 other professional member societies/organizations of PEC jointly sponsored the event.

  29. The deadline for submitting an entry to the 2005 Laurence Bement Young Professionals Paper Competition was February 23, 2005.  To be eligible, the first-authored paper must have been either published or accepted for publication in an archival and refereed publication and originally submitted while the first author was an AIAA member under the age of 35.  HRS Young Professionals Committee sponsored the event.

  30. Mr. Curtiss Peterson, Lead Conservator for the USS Monitor at the Mariners Museum presented a dinner program entitled “Conservation of the USS Monitor” on the evening of February 10, 2005 at the Mariner's Museum, Newport News.  HRS Programs Committee, ASM International, American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE), and ECVP jointly sponsored the program. 

  31. Mr. Michimasa Fujino, Project Manager of HondaJet Program at Honda R&D Americas, Inc. presented an afternoon lecture entitled “Development of the HondaJet” at NASA LaRC H.J.E. Reid Conference Center on February 10, 2005.  The program was preceded by a luncheon with Mr. Fujino, LaRC senior staff, and community leaders.  HRS Public Policy and Technical Committees, NASA LaRC, and National Defense Industrial Association (ADIA) jointly sponsored the program.

  32. Mr. John Bozewicz, Division Head at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) in Philadelphia, presented a dinner program entitled: “From Engineer to Manager: Roadmap for a Successful Transition" on January 20, 2005 at the Nauticus (Battleship Wisconsin Vista), Norfolk.  HRS Career Enhancement Committee and Eastern Virginia Section of the ASME jointly sponsored the program.


2004 AIAA HRS Events

 

1)      AIAA President, Dr. Donald W. Richardson, presented the Annual Wright Brothers Memorial Lecture entitled: "America's Stake in Aeronautical Research" on December 8, 2004 at the NASA LaRC H.J.E. Reid Conference Center.  The program was preceded by a luncheon with Dr. Richardson, LaRC senior staff, and Hampton Roads community leaders.  HRS Public Policy Committee and NASA LaRC jointly sponsored the event.

 

2)      Mr. Richard C. Smith III, Executive Vice President of NETJETS, presented a talk entitled “Fractional Ownership of Business Jets” on October 28, 2004 at the NASA LaRC H.J.E. Reid Conference Center.  The program was preceded by a luncheon with Mr. Smith, LaRC senior staff, and Hampton Roads community leaders.  HRS Public Policy Committee and NASA LaRC jointly sponsored the event.

5)      A Golf Tournament for the fund raising of “Futures in Aerospace Scholarship” program was held on August 26, 2004 at the Eaglewood Red Course, Langley Air Force Base.  HRS Education and Pre-college Committees jointly sponsored the activity.

 

6)      One-day field trip to Smithsonian Institution's Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum on August 14, 2004 via a chartered bus.  HRS Programs Committee sponsored the activity.

 

7)      Boeing Senior Managers, Ron Mutzelburg and Roselee Roberts gave a lunchtime briefing entitled “Corporate and Political Outlook” on July 1, 2004 at the NASA LaRC Cafeteria.  The program attendees included LaRC senior staff and Hampton Roads community leaders. 8)      AIAA Distinguished Lecturer, Mr. Robert (Gene) Austin, presented a program entitled “Future Space Transportation, Where Now?” for the AIAA HRS 41st Annual Awards Banquet on May 20, 2004 at the NASA Langley’s H.J.E. Reid Conference Center.  HRS Programs Committee sponsored the program.

 

9)      Mr. Mike Hartnett, Partner and Vice President of Arisen Mortgage presented a lunchtime program entitled “Mortgages and Real Estate Investing” on May 18, 2004 at the NASA LaRC Cafeteria.  HRS Young Professionals Committee sponsored the program.

 

 

10)  Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis (R-VA, 1st District) conducted a Town Meeting to discuss various politics/issues/bills of interest to the Civil Service on April 15, 2004 at the NASA LaRC H.J.E. 12)  Dr. Willi W. Schur, AIAA HRS 2004 Engineer of the Year, presented the Annual Axel T. Mattson Dinner Lecture entitled “Scientific Ballooning: The Foundation, Evolution, and the Ups and Downs of Current Challenges” on March 31, 2004 at the Point Plaza Suites & Conference Hotel.  HRS Programs Committee sponsored the program.

 

 

2003 AIAA HRS Events

 

1)      Mr. David Garrigus, a producer, writer and director of documentaries and educational programs, presented the Annual Wright Brothers Memorial Lecture to celebrate and commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first flight by the Wright Brothers on December 17, 2003 at the NASA LaRC H.J.E. Reid Conference Center.  The event included live narration of a two-hour long critically acclaimed documentary film entitled “The Wright Brothers: Invention of Powered Flight”.  The program was preceded by a luncheon with Mr. Garrigus, LaRC senior staff, and Hampton Roads community leaders.  HRS Public Policy Committee and NASA LaRC jointly sponsored the event, as part of the Centennial of Flight Celebration.

 

2)      Ms. Betty Geiger Darst presented two lectures entitled “A Personal Account of the First Family of Aviation — The Wrights” on December 3, 2003 at the NASA LaRC H.J.E. Reid Conference Center (2 PM) and at the Virginia Air & Space Center (7 PM).  HRS Public Policy Committee, NASA LaRC, VASC, and VSGC jointly sponsored the event, as part of the Centennial of Flight Celebration.

 

3)      AIAA Distinguished Lecturer, Dr. Benton C. Clark, Director of Advanced Planetary Studies at Lockheed Martin, gave a lunchtime lecture entitled “Pathway to Mars” on November 19, 2003 at the NASA LaRC Cafeteria.  HRS Programs Committee sponsored the program.

 

4)      Mr. Tom Crouch presented two lectures entitled ““Inventing Flight: The Science of Balloons, the Technology of Wings” on November 5, 2003 at the NASA LaRC H.J.E. Reid Conference Center (2 PM) and at the Virginia Air & Space Center (7 PM).  HRS Public Policy Committee, NASA LaRC, VASC, and VSGC jointly sponsored the event, as part of the Centennial of Flight Celebration.

 

5)      Annual Oyster Roast at the NASA Langley Picnic Ground on October 30, 2003.  HRS Programs Committee sponsored the activity.

 

6)      Senator John Warner (R-VA) talked on the subject of “Increase of Funding for Aeronautical Research” on October 3, 2003 at the NASA LaRC H.J.E. Reid Conference Center. HRS Public Policy Committee and NASA LaRC jointly sponsored the event.

9)      Dr. Joel Levine gave a lunchtime lecture on “ARES Mission to Mars: The First Flight of an Airplane on Another Planet” on June 13, 2003 at the NASA LaRC Cafeteria.  HRS Young Professionals Committee sponsored the program.

 

10)  Mr. Blair Gloss, who served on the staff of the Presidential Commission on the Future of the U.S. Aerospace Industry, gave a briefing on “Presidential Commission on the Future of the U.S. Aerospace Industry" on May 29, 2003.  HRS Public Policy Committee sponsored the program.

 

11)  Dr. Bruce Holmes, AIAA HRS 2003 Engineer of the Year, presented a program entitled "21st Century Innovations in Air Mobility” for the AIAA HRS 40th Annual Awards Banquet on May 22, 2003 at the Omni Hotel, Newport News.  HRS Programs Committee sponsored the program.
