Calculated 12-01-1997 @ 11:15:00 from two line elements obtained from "ftp://archive.afit.af.mil/pub/space/tle.103". The following predictions are valid for a terrestrial latitude of 36.7 North, longitude -76.3 West, the location of Langley Research Center, Hampton, Virginia. The times given are Eastern Standard Time.

Mir Frequency List:

Special Note - Sputnik 40 is a 1/3 scale copy of the original Sputnik 1 satellite first orbited by the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) on October 4, 1957. The signal from Sputnik 40 can be recognized by a beep-beep tone.

More information about the Sputnik 40 project is available from:

Most police-type scanners will program the frequencies listed above. One should utilize a light squelch setting and consider a +/- (approaching)/(departing) 4.5 kHz Doppler shift to these signals. The Mir crew is operating on Moscow standard time so they are not likely to be heard after about 5 p.m. (EDT) in the states though this is not always the case. The Mir Amateur Radio call sign is R0MIR.

The transits listed below are when the Mir Complex will be 10 degrees or more above the southeast Virginia horizon. Receiving a radio signal from Mir is not dependent upon lighting or weather conditions. Since the Mir Complex is in low earth orbit at 390 km (240 statute miles) altitude, the horizon to horizon interval to listen to Mir communications is not usually much more than about 10 minutes in length, four times a day.
